Tennis for 2010- Boys' Report
2009 was a very ‘slow’ year for VP in terms of tennis, especially for the boys. This year we only entered one boys’ team and they managed to do really well.
The entire boys’ team consisted out of matriculants. The boys only lost one match and that loss was unfortunately against Grey. Josh Barry (ranked number 1), had an exceptional season and managed to win all his matches and is also the 2010 boys’ singles champion.
With the whole team consisting out of matriculants and having to train a new group of boys the main aim is to build a strong team for next year. At the moment we have a lot of youngsters who are interested in playing tennis and some of them have great potential to make even the provincial side.
We would like to bid farewell to Josh Barry, Samuel Salcedo, Aluta Mlonzi and Chris Leitch and wish them all the best for the future. They have been with the tennis for a number of years and we truly appreciate it.
GIRLS’ TENNIS REPORT 2010
This year we entered two Girls’ Summer Tennis Leagues. Our first team was one of six schools who played in the 1D League. We struck a lull in our tennis achievements as many seniors left at the end of 2009, but we are looking forward to our juniors gaining experience. Great talent has, however, come through.
One of our first team players have been chosen to play in the PE and District Squad Team - a wonderful opportunity for Khanyisile Mapalala, a grade 9 pupil. Khanyisile Mapalala is also the 2010 Girls’ Singles Champion.
Our 2009 singles champion, Haylee Jones, leaves us this year to write her Matric finals. We wish her well and thank all the teachers who assisted with matches during the first term.
Our girls will tour to East London during the fourth term where we will compete against the challenging teams of Grens and Sterling High.
We wish all our tennis players all the best for the 2011 summer seaon.
