Junior City Council for 2009

When I was elected to represent Victoria Park at the Junior City Council, I was extremely intimidated at first. However, after a few council meetings and an interesting camp, I made lifetime friends, was at ease with constantly speaking over a microphone and voicing my opinions as well as wearing a long green robe.

My year on the council has been hard work and has taught me so many valuable lessons, namely confidence in my abilities and working together as a team. It is an amazing experience to be mixing with people from different walks of life, but coming together with a common goal, which is to serve the community. Junior City Council is an opportunity which has enriched my life and one which I would encourage teenagers to get involved in.

Over the past year, we have been involved in organizing a range of events; the most anticipated being the JCC BALL. We managed to raise over R20 000 which will be used to fund our various projects over the next tenure. I am very proud of being selected on the executive board as the Head of Editorial for 2009/2010 and for continuing the VP tradition. This places me in charge of editing and publishing the JCC magazine, JUICCE, as well as releasing quarterly newsletters.

I would like to wish my new junior councilor, Reece Adams, the best of luck for the new year and I’m sure he will keep the VP flag flying high. Sadly, I have to bid farewell to my senior councilor, Kirsty Clarke, who has always been a shining example to me as well as a wonderful friend. She served as the Head of Fundraising and no one was surprised when she was awarded the Junior City Councilor of the year. I would like to congratulate her and wish her well for her future.
