Another year has come and gone … where? As matrics, we take a look back at our 5 years in the first cricket side. We have accomplished a lot in our years in the side, from being juniors to where Lindsay Geach is leading the side and I have been the vice-captain.

This year stands out the most for us. The side has performed well despite having a large number of juniors included – we have beaten most of our top rivals including teams we have struggled to beat in the past – all because of determination and a good team spirit. This was also the first year in which the girls toured. We went to East London and beat two of the top schools in the league quite convincingly.

The season’s performers were Lindsay Geach ( EP and SAu21), Donna-Lee Harmse (EP), Noluvuyo Mhlauli (bowling and batting) and Sasha Pillay (bowler). Thanks to the rest of the players for their contributions to the afore-mentioned successes.

We would like to thank Mr Roos for contributing to making our final year a memorable one. Thanks must also go to Mr Hutchison who coached the seconds and Mr Snodgrass who coached the third team. We will forever be proudly Victorian and live courageously.

Donna -Lee Harmse

GIRLS’ CRICKET 2008

Girls’ cricket has developed and improved tremendously at V.P over the years and has become popular with the new grade 8 learners. This year has been filled with ups and downs but the girls have persevered. The girls’ first team has done the school proud over the first half of the season and hope to do even better during the fourth term. This is also the first year the girls will be going on a tour so we wish them the best of luck.

Congratulations must go to Donna-Lee Harmse for making the E.P U/16 team as well as Lindsay Geach, Yeshni Munsamy and Christine Vorster for making the E.P U/19 team.

A special thank you must go to our manager Mr. Roos for organising everything for us and umpiring our matches. Mr. Barry Rhodes must also be thanked for all the hard work and effort he has put into coaching us. The girls would also like to thank Mrs. McLeod for our wonderful new match kit.

This is the first year that the girls will be going on a tour so we wish them the best of luck.

By: Christine Vorster

The girls have worked hard this season but unfortunately rain reduced our fixtures drastically.
The second team has shown a lot of enthusiasm and will hopefully play more fixtures in the future – rain permitting of course! Thanks to Mr Hutchison for all his hard work in moulding the seconds into a competitive side.
Congratulation to all the girls who made provincial sides this year. They were fully deserving of their selection.
The intention was to travel to George to participate in a tournament during the holidays but the organisers changed the dates which did not suit us. Instead, we will travel to East London for a short two-match tour from the first Friday to Sunday of the fourth term.
Finally, a sincere thank you to Christine, our captain, for her leadership and dedication this season.

B Roos

The Girls Cricket fraternity has grown considerably this year and many young and talented players have been discovered. Although cricket is a male dominated sport, there are some girls who can throw, catch and bat better than many males!

The ladies started the season off doubting their abilities because the first team lost a few players due to injuries. However, in true Victoria Park fashion, it was spirit that brought us through. We stopped relying on individual excellence and focused on working as a team. In this way every team member contributed something unique. Humour and a passion to win surprisingly went hand-in-hand. A few new friendships were formed and a million laughs shared.

The girls did an amazing job this year and it is clear to everyone what the value of playing sport is. The players experienced a challenging and educational season on the soccer field; and it just goes to prove that all lessons are not necessarily learnt in a classroom.

We would like to thank Mr Roos, Mr Hutchinson and old Victorian, George Roman for their time and enthusiasm.

Congratulations to the following EP Representatives:
Christine Vorster – U-16
Lindsay Geach U-19 and Senior Ladies.
