FIRST TEAM SPORTS DINNER 2008
Our annual sports’ dinner was held on 28 August this year. This is a prestigious event for all 1st teams, not only to celebrate a successful sports season, but also to congratulate the players and coaches of these teams for their hard work and dedication. Parents were also invited, as they play just as an important role in the sporting success of our school.
Once again this event was held in the Thorp Hall at school. The venue was beautifully decorated and everyone was treated to a night to remember. Mr Martin Nefdt, a former Springbok cyclist, enthralled us all with the wonderful and interesting stories he shared with us. In drawing on his own experiences, his special message of perseverance became very personal to all. An extra bonus of hosting Mr Nefdt on the evening was that he, in his capacity as representative of the Puma-brand, promptly made a sponsorship to some of our sports teams. For this we would like to thank Mr Nefdt and Puma in advance.
Definitely one of the highlights of the evening was the announcement of the much anticipated sports team of the year. This year the glory was shared between Girls’ and Boys’ Hockey. Congratulations to these two teams – Our hockey-girls are definitely going to look great in their Puma-sponsored kit next season!! The evening was also a celebration of the coaches who have put in a lot of hard work to motivate their teams. Without their hard work, the sports’ season of 2008 would not have been the tremendous success it was.
The evening was a great success. On behalf of all the first team coaches I would like to extend a special word of appreciation to our headmaster, Mr Mike Vermaak. His passion for sport and his presence next to the various fields and courts during the season inspired us all. Also to the head of sport, Mrs. Estelle McLeod – her support and encouragement are the driving force behind the enthusiasm shown by both the coaches and players.
To all members of the V.P. sporting fraternity: You did us proud in 2008. Keep up the hard work. The 2009 season is indeed something to look forward to.
Mrs. E. du Preez
